Funds from St. Joseph Friends tourney
complete $75,000 pledge for therapy pool

A Clinton County group, (from left) Dr. Tim and Kathy Droege, John Henss, Karen Osborn, Gail Wade and Jerry Henrichs, took first place in the Mixed Flight at the June 15 golf tournament sponsored by the Friends of St. Joseph's Hospital in Breese; they received coolers for their efforts. A total of 29 teams participated in the 18 th annual scramble. Proceeds completed a three-year $75,000 pledge toward an aquatic therapy pool at the new St. Joseph 's HealthPlex set to open this summer. A three-year $75,000 pledge for an aquatic therapy pool at the HealthPlex at St. Joseph's Hospital in Breese was completed thanks to all who participated in the June 15 Friends of St. Joseph's tournament.

"We couldn't have done it without everyone's support," said Jill Timmermann of Breese, Friends board member and event chairperson.

The 18-hole scramble at Governor's Run Golf Course in Carlyle attracted 29 teams of six, 76 hole sponsors, gift and monetary donors.

Highlights included a Hawaiian vacation sponsored by Hill-Rom for a hole-in-one on Hole #2 and cash prizes donated by the three county Chevrolet dealers-Deien in Trenton, Jansen in Germantown and K & J in Carlyle-for men's and women's closest-to-the-pin, longest drive and longest putt competitions.

Honors went to Kim Diekemper and Pat Norrenberns for closest-to-the-pin, Karen Hoelscher and Eric Huther for longest drive; and Jen Burgner and Jim Martin for longest putt. The trip to Hawaii went unclaimed.

In keeping with this year's "Casino Royale" theme, the Friends offered a golf cart poker run with prizes courtesy of Ameristar Casino and the Friends. Winners were Paul Lampe, Mike Rolfes and John Henss.

When all the results were tallied, Mike Donnewald, Aaron and Larry Funk, Eric Huther, Craig Heinzmann and Vince Chawgo were the overall champions with a score of 51. They took home Coca-Cola coolers courtesy of the hospital administration and also claimed $135 for winning the skins competition.

First, second and third places were given in Men's, Women's and Mixed Flights.

In the men's division, taking first place with a 53 were Mike Rolfes, Dean Mallinckrodt, Tim Smith and Mike Leonard; in second with a 55 were Pat Norrenberns, Butch Beer, Tom and Chris Frerker, Virgil Jansen and Richard Fee; and finishing third with a 56 was Dean, Brandon and Luke Mallinckrodt, Brian Coyle, James Lampe and Max Wood. (Dean Mallinckrodt played on a morning and an afternoon team.)

Cardinal chairs and Cardinal drinkware courtesy of Managed Care Partners and Schuette Super Valu Food Stores were presented for first place; golf passes and golf balls sponsored by Governor's Run and Dennis Herzig were awarded for second; golf passes and poker steins from Bent Oak Golf Course and Comprehensive Care Pharmacy were given for third place.

For the ladies, in first place with a 65 were Jill Timmermann, Lynn Rinella, Jan Deiters, Mary Usselmann, Joann Lampe and Sarah Buckles; taking second with a 67 were Judy Schrage, Sharon Henrichs, Sharon Bickl, Barb VonAlst, Julie Becker and Jeannie Weber; and in third with a 69 were Paulette Evans, Karen Lager, Marla Mensing, Jan Schwierjohn, Mona Henrichs and Kim Diekemper.

The fourth Women's team included Aggie Kampwerth, Madelyn and Marcella Timmermann, Marita Hilmes, Mickey Williamson and Pehg Zeller.

Prizes included mantel clocks from Premier Care for first, CD players courtesy of Behrmann's Meat & Processing for second and ice cream makers with supplies sponsored by the Villas at St. James for third.

In the Mixed Flight, after a score care play-off, first place was awarded to Dr. Tim and Kathy Droege, John Henss, Karen Osborn, Gail Wade and Jerry Henrichs and second place went to Dr. Ventrapragada Mohan, Jen Burgner, Dr. Jon Osborn, Mike Olson, Dr. Loren Hughes and Greg Poetz, each with a 58. In third with a 59 were Michele Maue, Geralyn and Jeff Vogel, Karen and Jon Hoelscher and Jim Hettenhausen.

Mixed Flight winners received coolers courtesy of Robert Bruegge's law office for first place; golf barbeque sets and thermometer forks from Salem Tax Service and Leonard Rose for second; and DVD players sponsored by Argent HFS for third..

Other men's teams included:

Proceeds from the Friends 2005 and 2006 tournaments also went toward the new aquatic therapy pool.

The new St. Joseph's HealthPlex will open mid-summer with an expanded Physical Therapy area; space for Senior Renewal, the hospital's senior adult program; cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation; an exercise area for Athletes Advantage, the hospital's sports medicine program, and other exercise programs; a physician's office with waiting and exam rooms; and an education/conference room.

In addition to Jill Timmermann, who served as this year's tournament chairman, Friends Board members include Board Chairman B. Carson Hempen of New Baden; Elaine Behrmann and Tom Broeckling of Albers, Irene Kruse of Bartelso, Jerry Timmermann of Breese, John Hudspeth of Carlyle, Ann Schroeder of Germantown, Leonard Rose of Salem and Bryan Marsh of Trenton .

Karyn Whitlatch is the hospital Development Director; Stacy Albers is the department assistant.

The next Friends event will be the fall social at Hidden Lake Winery in rural Aviston in September.
