Psychiatrist Scott Arbaugh, MD, to see patients weekly

Beginning Jan. 8, Board-certified psychiatrist Scott J. Arbaugh, MD, will see patients from 1 to 5 p.m. every Tuesday at the HealthPlex at St. Joseph's Hospital in Breese.

Certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, Dr. Arbaugh is on the active medical staffs at Barnes-Jewish and Christian hospitals in St. Louis and the consulting staffs at St. Joseph's in Breese and Alton Memorial hospitals. His practice is limited to those 18 years old and over.

At Breese, Dr. Arbaugh also serves as the medical director for Senior Renewal and the Memory Diagnostic Clinic.

Senior Renewal is a weekday outpatient program for adults (generally) 60 years old and over who are dealing with depression, anxiety and "nerves." Goals include restoring a sense of well-being and quality of life and helping participants-over 200 since the program began in 2005-return to the peak of their capabilities.

Participants follow an individual treatment plan that can include education, group and individual therapy. Group sessions, which also serve as a support group, cover a variety of topics including coping skills, stress reduction, emotions, grief and loss issues, among others.   

The Memory Diagnostic Clinic, available Tuesdays at the HealthPlex with services provided by Alton Memorial's Center for Senior Renewal, focuses on the diagnosis and management of dementia. Dr. Arbaugh has been the medical director for the Alton Center for Senior Renewal since 2000.

Dr. Arbaugh received his medical degree from St. Louis University, completing his residency at Barnes. He opened a private practice in Florissant, Mo., and later formed Northwest Psychiatric Associates, a group practice.

His schedule at St. Joseph's in Breese has increased substantially since he began seeing patients one Tuesday a month in July. Dr. Arbaugh increased his availability to twice a month in September and October and to three Tuesdays a month in November and December.
