PiYo classes provide agility, balance and strength; now offered at HealthPlex

Appropriate for all fitness levels and considered a unique approach to mind and body workouts, a Pilates and yoga inspired program called PiYo is now being offered at the HealthPlex at St. Joseph's Hospital in Breese.

Lynn Rinella, hospital Physical Therapy director and class coordinator, said PiYo is a fusion of flowing movement designed to make participants strong, stretched and centered.

Sessions are $40 for the eight-week series and participants do not need to be HealthPlex members to attend. Class size is limited to 20 participants.

According to Rinella, PiYo is a strong, dynamic, fluid approach to mind/body teaching that encompasses many formats. The focus is on the “fusion” style which incorporates dynamic balance, strength and functional training and emphasizes the athleticism of Pilates, yoga and dance conditioning.

Although PiYo offers modifications so anyone from beginner to advanced will benefit—and the workout is easy to follow—participants can expect to sweat, Rinella said. Perspiring is beneficial physically and the participant will receive the full benefit of the exercise because the muscles are warm.

Exercises and poses are selected and balanced through angles and application of force. Each PiYo lesson builds on the previous to increase exercise adherence and avoid hitting plateaus, Rinella said. Lessons offer moving and held poses as well as added movement to the upper body for balance and strength.
