Auxiliary presents $25,566 for Women/Infants security system
The Auxiliary at St. Joseph's Hospital in Breese took the opportunity of National Hospital Week's Volunteer Day to present $25,566.31 for an infant security system in the Women and Infants Center (WIC).
This year's donation was combined with the $50,000 the group gave in 2008 to cover the $75,000 cost, said Judy Schrage, director of Volunteer Services which coordinates Auxiliary activities.
The funds are the result of many volunteer hours including Gift Shop sales; quilt raffles, sales and silent auctions; used book fair; holiday bazaar; bake sales and other activities.
WIC Director Helen Essenpreis accepted the gift and thanked the organization for their generosity.
“Parents are very impressed with the system,” Essenpreis said, noting the equipment has already been installed. “This is another piece of what we do to keep our babies safe.”
Kathryn Mines, hospital Human Resources director and administrative liaison to Volunteer Services, thanked the Auxiliary on behalf of hospital President and Chief Executive Officer Lowell Jones, board and committee members, administrative team and entire staff.
“Thank you so much for all you do for St. Joseph's in Breese,” Mines said. “Your gracious and willing support to our mission is invaluable.”
Schrage opened the afternoon reception by expressing her appreciation for everyone's efforts.
“Thanks to all of you for what you do,” Schrage said. “Lots of things would go undone if not for the volunteers.” The organization has over 400 members.
Volunteers collect paper for recycling, reuse donated flower vases and pots, clean and repair stuffed animals for pediatric patients and parades, prepare charts and packets, provide computer support and assist staff, serve at hospital functions including blood drives and health fairs and serve as Eucharistic Ministers.
The group makes major contributions to the hospital, supports the Friends' golf tournament and presents grants-in-aid to healthcare students. As of 2008, the group has given $119,000 to 250 students during the program's 38-year history; the 2009 grants will be given at the Auxiliary's annual meeting in late June.
