Urologist Christopher Arett, MD, joins staff

Urologist Christopher Arett, MD, has been granted privileges in urology and urological surgery and is now seeing patients at St. Joseph's Hospital in Breese.

He is a general urologist with an interest in minimally invasive surgery including laparoscopy, lithotripsy and endoscopic treatment of enlarged prostate or BPH, bladder cancer and urinary stone disease.

Dr. Arett received his medical degree from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, completing a urology residency in the university's Division of Urologic Surgery and a general surgery internship in the Department of Surgery at the University of California, San Francisco.

As an undergraduate, he received a bachelor's degree in biology summa cum laude or with highest honors, also from Washington University.

Among other honors, Dr. Arett, now with Belleville Urology Associates, was named Outstanding Laparoendoscopic Resident Surgeon by the Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons, received the Lawrence Aronberg Award for outstanding urology resident and was awarded the Southern Medical Association Student and the Dr. Lee B. and Virginia G. Harrison scholarships.

Earlier, Dr. Arett received the National Science Foundation Undergraduate Research Assistant Grant, the Howard Hughes Medical Institute Summer Research Fellowship and the Missouri Bright Flight and Astronaut scholarships. He had the departmental honors thesis for Washington University's Department of Biology.

Dr. Arett has research and teaching experience at Washington University's Institute for Minimally Invasive Surgery and Departments of Pharmacology, Biology and Plant Biology and has completed professional papers for publications and seminars including for the Urological Association annual meeting in Atlanta, Ga.

He is a member of the American Urological Association, the Endourological Society, the American Association of Clinical Urologists and the Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons.

Dr. Arett is the second urologist at St. Joseph-Breese; also seeing patients is Demetrios Katsikas, MD.

A board-certified urologist since 2000, Dr. Katsikas received his medical degree from Wayne State University School of Medicine in Detroit, Mich., completing a general surgery internship and a urology residency at St. Louis University Medical Center and a urologic oncology internship at Roswell Park Cancer Institute in Buffalo, NY.

In addition to his medical practice, Dr. Katsikas is on the clinical faculty at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis.
