St. Joseph receives 5-Star honors for emergency, obstetric, inpatient care

For the eighth consecutive year, St. Joseph’s Hospital in Breese has received a 5-Star Customer Service Award for Emergency Services from Professional Research Consultants (PRC) of Omaha, Neb.

In addition, for the second straight year, 5-Star honors for quality care were awarded for inpatient care and to the Women and Infants Center.

Five-Star designations are given annually to healthcare facilities that score in the top 10 percent—above the 90 th percentile—of PRC’s national client database for the prior calendar year.

The honors are based on the percentage of patients who rated St. Joseph’s in Breese “excellent” for overall quality of care in the Emergency Department and Women and Infants Center and for overall inpatient care, said Jan Robert, hospital Quality Management director.

“We are proud to receive these honors” Robert said. “Continually achieving this high level of patient satisfaction represents the efforts of everyone—staff, physicians, volunteers and leadership.”

Throughout the year, via weekly telephone calls, PRC contacts a random sampling of patients who have used the hospital’s services. During confidential interviews, patients answer a series of questions about their care, focusing on nurses, physicians and staff as well as Lab, Medical Imaging, registration and billing, overall safety and privacy issues.

Patients respond on a five-point scale and results are used to improve patient care. The data also serves as a comparison with other hospitals.

St. Joseph’s in Breese cares for about 10,000 ER patients annually for a variety of situations including common and acute childhood, adult and geriatric illnesses, sports injuries, cardiac ailments, trauma such as vehicle and other accidents, psychiatric situations and handling of hazardous materials.

About 475 families a year use the Women and Infants Center and the hospital sees an additional 1400 inpatients annually.

A plaque commemorating the honor will be displayed at the hospital.
