Obstetrician/Gynecologist Bonnie Gelly, MD, now board certified
Obstetrician/Gynecologist Bonnie Marie Gelly, MD, with Southern Obstetric and Gynecologic Associates (SOGA) of Breese and a member of the active medical staff at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Breese, has completed requirements to be board certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
To qualify, a candidate must hold an unrestricted medical license with unrestricted hospital privileges, submit a year’s worth of patient records on which the candidate will be questioned, demonstrate the necessary technical skills and be of good moral and ethical character. The certification is effective for six years.
The mandatory written test, which Dr. Gelly took after her residency, demonstrates that she has the knowledge and skills required for medical and surgical care of women. The oral exams, which she completed recently, tests the physician’s skills, knowledge and ability to treat different conditions and includes information on surgeries, deliveries and office visits she has completed the past two years.
A Highland native, Dr. Gelly received her medical degree with academic distinction from Saint Louis University School of Medicine. She did her residency at St. Mary’s Health Center in Richmond Heights, Mo., a tertiary (high level) care center, receiving experience in caring for women with high-risk pregnancies.
During her training, Dr. Gelly served as a research assistant in the Family Practice Residency Program and Department of Chemistry at the SLU School of Medicine and at Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital in St. Louis. She also completed research on gestational diabetes mellitus, presenting her findings to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.
The SOGA physician is the daughter of pharmacists Julia and Roscoe Ammann of Highland and a 1995 graduate of Highland High School. Dr. Gelly lives in Highland with husband Aaron, who owns Gelly Excavating and Construction and farms with his father, and sons Brenden and Blake.
Others in the practice include board-certified obstetricians/gynecologists Douglas Combs, MD, Anne Doll-Pollard, MD, and Penny Gozia, MD.; and women’s health practitioner Nancy Taylor, RNC, MSN, WHNP.
SOGA physicians see patients at their main office in the Medical Arts Building at St. Joseph’s in Breese, at the HSHS Health & Wellness Center in Highland and at Salem Township Hospital. The group will again offer office hours in Greenville after the New Year.
Patients seeing a SOGA physician at any facility deliver at St. Joseph’s in Breese.
