CEO Paulette Evans’ farewell celebrates more than four decades of service/leadership at St. Joseph’s Breese

On Thursday, August 31, 2017, HSHS St. Joseph’s Hospital celebrated Paulette Evans, RN, MSN, and a career that spans more than 42 years. Paulette joined the hospital as a Nurse Aide in 1974, and worked her way up to Chief Nursing Officer. On October 21, 2014, HSHS announced that Evans had accepted the role of President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of St. Joseph’s Hospital Breese after serving in the interim role for several months.

In June of this year, Evans announced her retirement.

Dozens of colleagues, both past and present, joined with administrators, volunteers, Board members, physicians, and Evans’ family members in the hospital cafeteria to thank Paulette for her years of service and leadership. HSHS Southern Illinois President and CEO Jim Dover emceed a brief program to open the festivities.

In lieu of gifts or flowers, Evans had asked that donations be made to a fund to help nurses meet educational goals. During the program, Dover presented Evans with two ceremonial checks to open The Paulette Evans Nursing Education Endowment. HSHS St. Joseph’s Hospital Breese and the Hospital Sisters Health System Southern Illinois Division each presented $1000 to HSHS St. Joseph’s Foundation Breese, the organization that will handle the fund.

Judy Schrage, hospital Director of Volunteer Services, announced that the Auxiliary would be presenting a $1000 grant-in-aid next spring in Evans’ name to a student attending college in pursuit of a health care career. A walkathon will take place at the fitness track just north of the hospital the morning of Saturday, Sept. 9, to help fund the Auxiliary’s scholarship program. Call 526-5351 for information, or to register for the one-mile walk.

HSHS President and CEO Mary Starmann-Harrison spoke of the hospital’s nationally recognized performance and credited Evans, who humbly passed along the credit to her many colleagues over the years. Starmann-Harrison also presented Evans with a crystal “St. Clare’s Cross” to keep as a remembrance of her service to the mission of the Franciscan hospital system.
